The artichoke ( Cynara scolymus) , a member of the Asteraceae family, is native to the Mediterranean region. It is a large herbaceous plant, growing up to two meters tall, with large, deeply incised leaves. Artichokes have been known and cultivated since ancient Roman and Greek times.
Artichokes are used as a herb and in the production of dietary supplements. The herbal raw material is the artichoke leaf, Cynarae folium . It primarily contains phenolic acids, including chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and cynarin. These components are responsible for artichoke's positive effect on blood fat levels, which may be of interest to those seeking to reduce their body fat levels.
Artichoke stimulates the secretion of bile acids by the liver, which improves the digestion of food (especially those containing fats) and generally improves liver function.
